Argentina’s star is willing to depart Camp Nou before the new campaign, but Ramon Calderon suspects that interested clubs will afford him
Ramon Calderon expects a reduced fee for the transfer of “priceless” captain Lionel Messi to Barcelona.

After a tough season at Camp Nou, Messi asked to leave Barca-his only senior team-in which they struggled to win a trophy in the rivalry between the board and the talisman.

The 33-year-old has a clause in his contract which allows him to end his deal and leave the club at the end of each season for free.

Messi is reported to want to trigger this clause, but Barca claims that the right has already expired for this year, given the coronavirus pandemic prolonging the 2019-20 season.

Otherwise, rival clubs will have to pay € 700 million (£627m/$828 m) to free Messi from its deal, a sum that would seem beyond any suitor given Financial Fair Play ‘s demands and the effect of the global crisis.

But Calderon, the former President of Real Madrid, is optimistic that Josep Maria Bartomeu will consider a compromise.

“I’m pretty sure a friendly agreement will be reached,” Calderon told Stats Perform News. “We were together for 20 years.

“Messi has given Barcelona his all and Barcelona has given Messi their all. They won several titles together. He wins six Golden Balloons.

“I ‘m confident they ‘re not going to go for a court battle and they’re going to settle it in a nice way. It’d be something I ‘d do and I’m sure Bartomeu [as president of Barcelona] will do the same.

“I recognize him. He is a patient guy and will be searching for the best option for both of them. There’s no need to go through any court dispute or conflict.

Messi ‘s large wage contract poses another stumbling block, but Calderon claims the forward provides value for money – even though it may entail a cut-price deal with Barca.

For Messi’s great rival Cristiano Ronaldo two years ago, Juventus paid Madrid just € 100 m (£90m/$117 m), a price Calderon considers a relative bargain.

“Obviously, if I were the president of any club that can sign [Messi] I would be enthusiastic,” Calderon said. “It’s true that he’s 33 but I’m sure he’s three or four years ahead of him at his best point.

“Having said that, how do you pay for him? Real Madrid gave a gift to sell Cristiano Ronaldo for €100 m because he demonstrates that he is still valuable and will be valuable for a few more years. “I don’t know – [the fee] is something to be set. I ‘m sure no one is going to bid €700 m but that’s not going to be the point.

“I ‘m sure Messi is going to try to get some payments for Barcelona, too. How many million? I just don’t know.

“The club that signs him will be fortunate but will also have an immense fee to pay. But he really deserves it. The value he brings is invaluable for a team.
