Montreal Effects of Wanyama down Vancouver Whitecaps after the break of the month

The match at Stade Saputo was the first sporting event in which fans were first permitted since the Covid-19 pandemic began
After a month ‘s break, Victor Wanyama’s Montreal Impact was able to pick up a 2-0 win Tuesday in a Major League Soccer (MLS) tie against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Wanyama and teammates at Stade Saputo welcomed their opponents as Romell Quioto and Lassi Lappalainen scored two important goals to raise their hopes for better results in the future.

For more than 10 months, Montreal Impact hasn’t been able to host matches at their home stadium, where they last picked up a 3-0 win against the New York Red Bulls to close the 2019 season.

Quioto and Lappalainen both scored first-half goals to seal a victory for the first time since they beat Orlando City 1-0 in the MLS knockout round on July 25.

Montreal Impact had to fight hard with 250 supporters attending to ensure the fans came home with a smile. It required the limited number of fans to comply with the Covid-19 safety regulations.

When the pandemic began, Montreal Impact became the first Canadian professional team to host fans for a game at a sporting event.

The hosts’ opener came in the 18th minute, when Quioto met Saphir Taider’s header and headed in. It is the third goal of the season for scorer.

As Lappalainen found himself in a one-on-one position with goalkeeper Thomas Hasal of the Vancouver Whitecaps, they scored the second and managed to bury the ball five minutes before half-time for a 2-0 lead.

Goalkeeper Clement Diop denied a goal for Vancouver Whitecaps when Lucas Cavallini stopped a penalty within the 51st minute.

Eastern Canada’s loss means that Vancouver Whitecaps lost in the last three games after losing to Toronto FC on August 18 and 21 respectively in the last two weeks.

They’ve conceded six goals and scored none as their campaign continues to falter every day.

Since playing a vital role in building up to the first goal and of course scoring the winning one, Lappalainen was elected the man of the match.

Wanyama ‘s coach, Thierry Henry, was happy with the return to their home ground hoping that something concrete could be formed.

“We are coming from Orlando, where no one lived,” Henry told the website of the band.

“We are now in the home. We can quit training and go back to our families. You can build something solider, which wasn’t the case in Orlando.

“The players are familiar with Stade Saputo, even though it isn’t going to be full. This does change things a little bit.

Montreal Impact is expected to host Toronto on 28 August.
