On Tuesday, the former Super Eagles captain made a Championship goal debut
John Obi Mikel scored his first goal for Stoke City in Tuesday’s pre-season friendly match in their 5-1 hammering of Shrewsbury Town.

Mikel, who joined the Potters earlier this month on a free transfer, made his first appearance for Stoke City at Clayton Wood training ground at the club.

The 33-year-old restored the lead of the hosts just before the break, after Shrewsbury Town cancelled out the opener from Oakley-Boothe.

Mikel was in action 45 minutes before being replaced by Tom Ince when Benik Afobe of DR Congo was substituted for Lee Gregory, nine minutes after the hour mark.

Afobe joined the party as goals from the Congolese star later in the second half, Ince and Tyrese Campbell completed the rout for Stoke City.

The encounter brought Stoke City back to winning ways after suffering a 1-0 loss to Burton Albion in their last friendly outing on August 22.

Despite a convincing win on Tuesday, Mikel will be ready to guide the Potters to win when they host Blackpool on Saturday at bet365 Stadium for their League Cup fixture.

In the meantime, O’Neill thanked the former Nigeria captain for his hard work for making an immediate impact in the squad.

“For his first few days, John was superb. You can see his success, there is no way, people in the community are seeing his success, “Stoke Sentinel quoted.

“He ‘s got to get on track. He worked really hard on Saturday morning, as did Steven Fletcher and Ryan Shawcross (when we had a game in the afternoon).

“I think it’s going to improve you when you bring a player of that quality and that’s what we’re always looking for to do, seeking to improve the squad, improve the squad quality and John does that.”

Stoke City is scheduled to launch their 2020-21 Championship campaign with a trip to Millwall on September 12.
