Midfielder Paul Pogba of Manchester United has tested positive for coronavirus. The 27-year-old was expected to be called up to France’s national squad in September before their Nations League matches against Sweden and Croatia.

But the French Football Federation (FFF) announced that Pogba would not be brought into the squad and was replaced by midfielder Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes. ‘Since Paul Pogba was included in this list, I had to make a change at the very last minute but he checked last night which turned out to be positive this morning,’ said France head coach Didier Deschamps Thursday.

Pogba was scheduled to begin pre-season training next Wednesday with United. But the midfielder will now be self-isolating for 14 days and will miss the beginning of United’s preparations for the new campaign.

A statement from United read: ‘Pogba was replaced in the squad after COVID-19 positive testing. The midfielder will not be able to add in next month’s games to its 69 caps and 10 goals for his country. ‘Everyone at United wishes Paul a speedy recovery ahead of the new season.

‘ The news will come as a further blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he is still without Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the start of United’s pre-season training as the right-back faces a 14-day quarantine following a holiday in Dubai.

In the meantime, Anthony Martial has, for the first time since March 2018, received a call-up for France’s national team. The 24-year-old has enjoyed his best season in front of last term goal for United, scoring 23 times in 48 appearances.

‘Since World Cup he [Martial] was going to be part of our squad three or four times, it didn’t happen for many different reasons,’ Deschamps said. ‘With what he’s been doing since last season, he’s back in the squad now.’ Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has also tested coronavirus positively and won’t be called up for the national side of France.
