The richest guy in the world, Jeff Bezos, is richer than he ever was. Early Wednesday he reached a threshold previously unprecedented in Forbes ‘nearly four decades of monitoring net worth: with Amazon ‘s stock edging 2 percent as of Wednesday afternoon, Bezos’ net worth is up $4.9 billion, making the 56-year-old the world’s first person ever to amass a fortune of $200 billion.

Ab 1:50 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, the Amazon founder and CEO is worth $204.6 billion — around $90 billion more than the second-wealthiest individual in the world, Bill Gates, currently worth $116.1 billion.

Forbes claims that when accounting for inflation, Bezos’ wealth is the highest ever amassed. The nearest person to come: Bill Gates, who was the first ever centibillionaire in the world. Near the dot-com bubble’s height, when Microsoft hit its peak in 1999, Gates’ net worth exceeded $100 billion, approximately $158 billion in dollars today.

Fuelled by the change in consumer behavior as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Amazon’s stock has risen nearly 80 percent since the start of the year, and Bezos’ net worth, which on January 1, was approximately $115 billion, has skyrocketed in tandem.

Bezos’ nearly 11 per cent interest in Amazon accounts for over 90 per cent of his fortune. He also owns the Washington Post, Blue Origin Aerospace and other private investments.

Bezos would be much wealthier had he not been through last year’s most costly divorce settlement in history. Last July, when he split from ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, he decided to give her 25 percent of his Amazon interest, a chunk of $63 billion in stock now.

Even after giving away $1.7 billion in charitable gifts earlier this year, Scott is currently the 14th-richest person in the world behind L’Oréal heiress Françoise Bettencourt Meyers and second-richest woman.

More centibillionaires now than ever on the planet. Joining Bezos, Gates and the newly crowned Zuckerberg is LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault who joined last year’s 12-figure ranks for the first time. Although his net worth fell to around $80 billion at the peak of March’s coronavirus pandemic, Arnault regained the centibillionaire title in May and is worth about $115 billion today. This makes him the third wealthiest person on earth – wealthier than Jeff Bezos at $90 billion.
