Bauchi Gov sends the names of the commissioner-nominees, the members of the BASIEC to the Assembly

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, on Tuesday sent four names to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as permanent members and secretary respectively, of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC).

The governor also sent names of two commissioner-nominees for screening and confirmation.

These were contained in two separate letters sent to the House by the governor, which were read on the floor of the House during plenary, requesting for the screening and confirmation of the nominees.

Those nominated by the governor as BASIEC permanent members are: Adamu Zakari from Itas/Gadau Local Government; Gauis Dauda (Tafawa Balewa Local Government) and Abdulmalik Aliyu from Katagum Local Government.

Governor Mohammed nominated Hamidu Adamu as Secretary of the state electoral body.

DAILY POST reports that the state government has scheduled local government elections for 17th October, 2020.

The elections would be the first to be held in the state in 12 years.

The commissioner-nominees whose names were sent to the Assembly by the governor are Dr. Asma’u Ahmed Giade from Giade Local Government and Honourable Maryam Garba from Dass Local Government.

Only last week, Hon Mohammed A Sadiq, the former Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, resigned his appointment as a commissioner on what he termed “personal ground”.

Sadiq, who is a supporter of the former Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has since joined his principal in the All Progressives Congress (APC) where he recently returned to.

Meanwhile, after the letters were read during plenary, the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Tijjani Muhammad Aliyu (Azare/Madangala) observed that the name of the BASIEC nominee from Katagum Local Government is erroneously written as Abdulmalik Aliyu instead of Abdulmalik Wakili.

He submitted that the appointment of the Secretary to the Commission is the prerogative of the governor, which does not need the approval of the House.

The Majority Leader, therefore, urged the House to write to the Secretary to the State Government, Mohammed Sabi’u Baba, for clarification of the BASIEC member-nominee from Katagum Local Government.

The Minority Leader, Hon. Bakoji Aliyu Bobbo, suggested that the commissioner-nominees should be invited for screening and confirmation by the House.
